Seneca Dominate Iroquois 16-11 in fast paced, high scoring 2019 Fall Ball All Star Game

The second annual Team NorCal HS Fall Ball All-Star Game saw the return of clear and crisp autumn air to Silicon Valley on Sunday night December 2nd.  Respecting the great traditions of the Six Nations - the birthplace of lacrosse - the teams were divided into Iroquois and Seneca teams.  The Seneca Tribe of the Iroquois Six Nations were commonly referred to as the 'Gatekeepers of the Western Door', and so given our Western location it seems right to honor them.

Once again this long awaited game lived up to the hype and anticipation.  From the opening whistle blown by referees Fred Tuerk and Lee Torno, the pace and skill of play seemed more akin to the end of season league and CCS Championship play than a fall ball game.  Many of the best players in the South Bay were on display, led by coaches Jonny Glazier and Cam Doane.

The large and boisterous crowd was ready for an entertaining matchup.  In contrast to last years heavily defensive focused contest, this year the offenses were really on display, as is typical in these kinds of All Star contests.

The Iroquois got in the first three punches of the night.  After six minutes of spirited yet scoreless back and forth possessions to start the game, and some extraordinary saves by Iroquois goalie Martin Jonson (Mtn View HS 2022), the Iroquois offensive leaders stepped up and put 3 goals on the board in rapid succession - Jack Galbraith (St Francis 2020), Aidan Gans (Palo Alto HS 2019) and Quinton Dwight (Palo Alto HS 2020).

The tide turned though, as the Seneca FOGO Niles Lo (Mountain View HS 2019), as he has all season, dominated the face-off circle - winning over 90% of his attempts, which led to a clear and frankly decisive advantage for the Seneca all night, who rang up 7 straight goals in the next 9 minutes of play to take a 7-3 lead.   Peter Christians, high scorer for the night with 5 unassisted goals, put in 4 of those goals in this 9 minute run, and Niles Lo, Danny Beglin (St Francis HS 2020), and Evan Wong (Palo Alto HS 2022) each added a goal.  In the last four minutes fo the first half, the teams swapped goals, with Galbraith and Gans tallying goals for the Iroquois, and Beglin and Matt Breen (Los Gatos HS 2020) putting up points for the Seneca.  It was 9-5 at the half, with the momentum seemingly well on the side of the Seneca.

After a spirited half time talk from their coach, the Iroquois stormed back and Gans put up another unassisted goal in the first minute of of play in the third quarter, bringing the game to within 3 goals at 9-6.  But the combination of Niles Lo at face-off and Peter Christians and Matt Breen  resumed their relentless offensive attack,  and the Seneca scored 4 goals (Christians, Breen (2) and Chris WIlk (Bellarmine 2021))  in the span of less than 2 minutes to go up 13-6 where it stood by the end of the third quarter.  Outstanding defensive play by the Seneca's Randy Lewis (Serra HS 2019) and Ryan Hood (Aptos HS 2022), and the entire midfield line which kept the Seneca's offensive weapons at bay for  the  third quarter, limiting them to just one goal.

An injury to Christians early in the 4th quarter changed the dynamics of the game, and the Seneca saw more possession time and put 5 goals on the board in the 4th quarter (Gans (2), Galbraith, Aidan Niklaus (Aptos HS 2022) and Henry Queen (Palo Alto HS 2019)), but it was not enough to close the gap, as Ryan Stratehearn (Palo Alto HS 2020) and Quinn Mount (Palo Alto HS 2022) scored a total of three goals for the Seneca to bring the final margin to 16-11 in favor of the Seneca.

So, the HS Fall Ball season comes once again to a fine conclusion.  Fall Ball has always been great chance for players to refine their skills in the off-season - while having fun in a low to no pressure environment.  The constant smiles of all the players each week proves we were successful on the fun front, and the quality of the play we witnessed last night proved we helped everyone get a little better before the regular high school season starts in late January.
